Worship – Part 3 – Purpose of prayers.

I am already happy in this world – then why should I worry about Bhakthi, Heaven, Moksham (Liberation), Vaikuntam (Holy abode of Lord Vishnu) etc? These are common questions from people. It is ok if there is but one life and there is no life after death. But it is not so. We are all subject to God’s final judgment on the merits of every life that we have passed. Nobody can escape that! We need to perform Bhakthi for this reason. We are happy thus far because of good merits accrued by us thus far in our lives. But can we discount that we will not face hardships in life tomorrow? We should also perform Bhakthi for this reason of unpredictability of nature of life.

What you consider as your own in this world – family, possessions etc. are all nothing but temporary belonging or falsities (in Advaita sense – Mithya) in real sense. If we happen to realise that our experiences of this world are nothing but a passing dream , how difficult is it for you to comprehend that? To realise and be grounded in this conscious state as well, we should perform Bhakthi to The Lord.

A man generally feels proud and accomplished measuring his capabilities of being street-smart, undertaking planned efforts for greatness, and with his long term plans. Ye smart people ! You also need to understand Godliness that is inherent within you and take efforts to reach that bliss which is the source of permanent happiness. Start planning for your greatness for births to come, not just this birth of yours. That is greatness.

“Ok, but I don’t want to believe in above discussions and accept them , so do I have to be concerned (So I am not going to pursue Godliness because I don’t believe in it)? “ You may ask.

Truth does not change just because one does not trust in that. Just because we don’t believe in hell, doesn’t mean hell does not exist. Even for argument sake, we can analogise with such a non believing state of mind; Suppose there is weather forecast for rains in an area. If we carry umbrella, we are safe whether there is rain or not. Only when we don’t carry umbrella even with the forecast, we always run the risk of being caught up in rain.

Bhakthi is beautiful and gives joy. But there are some who don’t worship but undertake other sadhanas to realize God. They will definitely achieve their goals, but in Bhakthi path, joy (ananda) is the greatest. There is great experiential satisfaction in this mode. To be immersed in Bhakthi and perform various activities in Satsang/temples, those such as performing pujas, festivals and other such activities such as Thirukalyanam and ‘Purappadu’ (Holy processions) for Him gives utmost joy.

Lets discuss with an example. It is possible to take calorie count of a man’s daily food intake, and measure up the exact amounts of vitamins and minerals taken in. But it is sufficient to feed a man with just tablets/pills to match the usual calorie count and nutrition measures. The man just cannot be satiated even when body’s needs are met. He will still feel hungry. There has been no enjoyment of taste without food. Thus food is something that needs to satiate both energy and palate of a person. Similarly it is not sufficient to approach God realisation with just the means of energy and context (using just Yantras and charms) – we need a referential beautiful form of him to satiate our worship needs.

Even when the ultimate goal of Bhakthi and Real Knowledge is Moksha (liberation), even a spiritual seeker undertaking knowledge path towards his Moksha, is empowered by Bhakthi in his journey. There is an example for this. It is common home remedy to medicate a child with mixture of ghee and sugar to help relieving his stomach discomforts. Even when cured of his ailment, the child wishes to have this tasty concoction always. Similarly even when the goal of Bhakthi is Liberation, the taste for Bhakthi lingers even after Moksha is attained. Bhakthi is that beautiful. When ‘Hari Namam’ – Holy names of God is uttered once, Liberation is assured. When Surrender is submitted to His feet, a place in Vaikunta is assured. If someone asks why he needs to continuously chant the names of God and celebrate Him, then that person has not enjoyed God.

A person first wishes to avail himself a small job. Soon after that he wishes to get a promotion and then later wishes to save for his future beyond the usual monthly expenses. Then his savings increases to cover for future education expenses of his children, their life settlement needs, and then for subsequent generation needs. Why does he do this? He has a taste for wealth. That is why he find all means to accrue more and more wealth even when he is old. Why does he not stop with finding money for his needs? It is because of taste for wealth.

Similarly, even when Hari Namam is uttered once sincerely, Mokha is guaranteed. Just like how the taste and penchant for wealth does not leave some of us, Mahans do not have a reduction in their taste for God’s names. There is no sense of sufficiency of uttering God’s names even for infinite number of times. Such a want to utter God’s names does not wane at all. In a way in which accrued and saved up wealth benefits future generations and the rest of the world, a person’s sincere Bhakthi and strength gained by uttering Nama (Holy Names) will ad value and strength for others too.

Who is God?

Worship – Part 2 – Understanding God and Bhakthi

So why are there numerous ways and means of worshipping a single God in Hinduism, that too in different forms? There are some amongst also, who mock that there are numerous Gods within Sanathana Dharma (Hinduism). In everything, the deepest and correct truth has to be understood instead of just skimming through the context and make a partial and incorrect opinion and keep insisting about them. Renouncing the world, controlling their minds for years together, what the Rishis have discovered using their spiritual prowess should be correct on all accounts. Again it is wrong to just pass comments on such without even attempting to understand.

This world comprises of numerous varieties of animals, trees, plants, birds, languages etc. Even in the human race, the count exceeds numerous crores. In all this, no two people are even similar to each other in the physical semblance and characteristics. The likes and dislikes also vary much between individuals, not to mention their differences in food, clothing, culture, habits, mindsets etc.

What one perceives as good, does not strike as good for another. Some like idlis,   some like dosas and yet some others like chapatis (Indian foodstuff). Even amongst those that idlis, some people like chutney and some like sambhar as accompanying dishes. Even this simple example, we can understand tat human mind is made of and needs variations. It is very difficult to change this natural aspect – the variations in human minds and likings. With such difference of attributes among humans it is important to seek and understand The Lord – who does not have any variation. Thus it is very difficult to sustain and develop involvement of all people in the path to realize God, if concepts of one form of God or even one path to attain Him are enforced. It is difficult for a man to change his mindset and proceed in search of God who is all pervading and endless.

The Lord is all powerful and hence steps down to a level that humans can contemplate and understand. For those who have affinity towards qualities such a Truth and Dharma, He appears as Lord Rama; for those who enjoy their God as playful and loving, He appears as Lord Krishna; for those who involve themselves in Bhakthi, Service, Brahmacharyam etc, He appears as Lord Hanuman; yet for others The Lord appears as Devi for those who seek a parental relationship with God. It is so arranged that each person can follow the route he likes and can stick to, in his search for that one God (sachidananda) principle.

Somebody has a plan to rob from others. Due to strict rules in his country, he does not undertake his plans and actually steal. As long as he still toys with his idea to steal he will not become a good man. So the rules and regulations have not made him a better person. It has only been successful in having him scared. When opportunity strikes, the man will not hesitate to cheat the laws and start stealing. So unless the mindset of a person is changed, any external change in his actions is not an actual change – not a permanent change!

Why doesn’t God punish a wrong doer instantly? Some ask why God does not punish a sinner immediately for his sin. They expect that a person who sin with his eyes should lose his eyes. The reason why God does not punish sinners thus is because any punishment meted out physical pain is not an effective method. God’s Grace is bountiful. That is why God is very patient with our sins and mistakes!

A person with complete devotion cannot even imagine a temple deity as just stone or metal. We see that rituals and worship methods vary between temples and places, even for the same form of God. It confuses to understand which method actually pleases Him. All methods of prayers to Him are correct. This is similar to a child who practices and likes only the food habits that is trained by his mother. Similarly a form of God which has been invoked by Mahatmas at a particular place and been serviced by those Mahatmas in their own styles, always expect worship procedures in the same manner; and should be celebrated such. This is the reason why there are so many different worship methods, differing by places and cultures. Devas, Kinnaraas and Siddhas still worship The Lord at such holy places. Even if it is not physically visible to a common man’s eyes, it is very evident to Mahans. That is why the Godliness of those holy places does not reduce. There are many rules laid down by Holy Sashtras in construction of a temple. That is even looking at the RajaGopurams of such aesthetically and scientifically built temples with correct features, brings about peace and calm to a mind even when viewed from far. Understanding these concepts, people should follow the correct rules and perform worship in correct procedures; by this we can achieve their highest goal of God realization by means of correct minds and means.

Is it ok to focus on material upliftment at a young age and wait for later to start Bhakthi? A lot of people say that Bhakti can be performed at old age. But nobody thinks if they can start eating at their old age. If they do so, then their bodies will become limp without energy. Similarly if they don’t perform Bhakthi, their Atma strength will decrease and wilt. They should realize this. Moreover, for all the time that Bhakthi is not developed and vested upon God realization, the karma will increase and accrue lakhs of rebirth before when Liberation can be attained. So Bhakthi is also something that should be taught and practiced from young age. Many around the world think that the purpose of Bhakthi is to beget a luxury home, professional upliftment, wealth, family and health. Actually with the help of all these aspects, one should start threading on Bhakthi path – that should be the ultimate goal. Even when one possesses all these but does not have Bhakthi to seek God, he is equivalent to a flower without fragrance!

It is difficult for a normal human mind to understand a mind of a great Mahatma. It is normal that a human being needs to vest his affection on another being. Families adopt a child if they don’t have one borne for them.   Why? Is it because they expect material support at their own old age? Are they fools enough to expect this when nowadays even one’s own child does not bother enough about their own parents? A reason for a mother’s love on her child is that love is natural in her and the child is a natural subject for her love. Similarly parents adopt to vest their natural love upon a subject. If we learn to and are able to vest such a natural love upon God, then that is Bhakthi. Bhakthi is so beautiful and heart warming.

At about the age of 50 and more, at the time of retirement from work, most of us are tired from work thus long and affected by ailments of eyes, ears and tiredness. Only because of this, even organizations provide compulsory retirement to many. Work that is rendered using mental faculties is more difficult to sustain and achieve than physical hard-work performed using muscle power. That is why in any society, the lawkeepers (judges), ministers, and higher officials are paid more and considered cream jobs than others. Bhakthi is something that needs to be done by and for control of mind. When attempted only during one’s old age, this is not going to be achieved fully and completely. One is not even considered fit for his professional work by then.

Worship – Part 1 – Who is God and what are worship methods

How many Gods are there in this world?

The essence of all scriptures and paths of Hinduism (Santhana Dharma) is to realise our Self (Atma). The Vedas (Hindu Holy scripts and edicts) are very ancient – so much so that any amounts of research and studies can only push the dates (periods) of its origins only to earlier periods than before, unable to unanimously establish the correct dates. Even those who don’t follow the Vedas agree to the fact about this ageless nature of Vedas. Vedas are nothing but the essence of The Lord. There is no hen without the egg and viceversa – it is just that we need to agree that none of this is possible without The Lord’s creation.

There cannot be many Gods in this world. Each country or city cannot have its own individual God. So is it that each race or community cannot have its own God.

Are worship methods for The God just for show and pomp?

There is but one God for all in all countries, cities, races, religions. Since that Lord is all-powerful and omni-present, it is just possible for all of us to worship in any form, with any name and we (and our prayers) can still reach Him. There are some who debate that Bhakthi, respect and reverence need not be shown outwardly to Gods as these are just attributes that are to be reflected in our minds and not for outward show. Such people say that practices such as applying tilak, wearing japa mala, prostrating to The Lord , performing Puja, service to Lord and Holy men (sadhus), are unnecessary habits. They even make fun questioning if only performing these acts can count as Bhakthi.

But in their day-to-day life, their children wear uniform to schools – they don’t question if children can study only with appropriate uniforms. The same people who debate like this, just jump out of their seats at workplace in the presence of senior officials! Unlike their justification that respect and love just need to be present only at heart, they hug and make merry when friends arrive. When others don’t treat them well especially when visiting each other’s homes, then they get upset and fight with each other instead of standing by their principles that respect and reverence need to be maintained at heart only (and no need for expressing in actions). Those returning home from foreign and other trips buy truck loads of gifts for children and others, just so to express their affection. Do they stop and think that their love can be expressed only by gifting to others? Even more than this, they don’t expect others to be happy or merry when they are sick or unhappy. They just expect others to come and enquire about them, even without thinking if such acts may reduce their suffering. We just need other’s empathy in words and actions and some of us don’t like others to be even happy without doing their part (As per our expectation).

From all this, we can understand that we always have been exhibiting our love, friendships, discipline, etiquette, joy and sorrow towards the world that we are living in. We also expect others to follow those things that we consider right. So in reality, we have been cheating ourselves by thinking that discipline, dedication, bhakthi and reverence in aspects of bhakthi just needs to be felt at heart and not needed to be translated in actions.

Why do we need to give forms of statues, house them in temples and follow worship decorum for The Lord who is the most super power in the universe? That something, which does not need names and forms, has only appeared as thousand (and more) name forms just because of its mercy on all of us. The meaning of word ‘Rishi’ is given to one who has seen a mantra in form. Seeing a mantra as a form means seeing an associated God with that mantra.

Just like how we think about a real cow or hen just by looking at corresponding toys, what the Maharishis (great Rishis) defined as forms of Gods as statue forms using their great spiritual powers, are the deities we worship in temples today.

Even when solar power (Sun’s rays) is available at all places, when the same is focused via prisms, the recieved ray magnitude increases such that enormous heat and power is generated. Similarly the great Maharishis have had great love and responsibilities for future generations, and using their strong spiritual powers have had created deity forms that resonate with omni-prevading Grace of The Lord. Even if we are not able to recreate such great feats, we can ensure that the Grace in deities and temples are not diminished over time. Thus we can also live a better life. Even when we don’t give due respect and even look at the deities when visiting temples, is it not true that The Lord is seeing us?

How can such respect, bhakthi and reverence shown for a stone or metal deity be considered as meant actually for The Lord?

How can any indifferent attitude shown to these worship methods be considered as wrong to The Lord?

Is it not possible to tag the creation dates for such deities even when The Lord cannot be measured with time?

Are’nt they just made of stone/metal? What is the difference between a stone lying on roadside, one that belongs to a great mountain and one that is being worshipped in temples?

And thus there are questions many!

Sri Adi Shankarar, Sri Rama Krishna Paramahamsar, Sri Ramana Maharishigal were also humans – just like us. Can we even compare ourselves to them? Even when they were humans themselves, the human clan now worships them. The reason for this is the Godliness in them. Similarly there is a fire of Godliness in the deities being installed and worshipped in temples. This power can protect as well as destroy the world. We should revere and pray to these forces.

In the society and politics, there are some in this world who offer garlands to pictures and cut-outs of their favorite society and political personalities; and still imagine they have offered something to the actual person. Even those people of fame consider such acts as something that has been performed to their own self. Any respect or disrespect shown towards national symbols is considered as performed towards the nation and patriotism is values upon such acts. Similar to this, bhakthi and respect shown towards deities in temples reaches The Lord and any disrespect done to deities is considered for The Lord Himself. So we must, in all possible ways undertake spiritual journeys (yatras) to holy places and temples and become recipients of His Grace.

So why are there numerous ways and means of worshipping a single God in Hinduism, that too in different forms?

There are some amongst also, who mock that there are numerous Gods within Sanathana Dharma (Hinduism). In everything, the deepest and correct truth has to be understood instead of just skimming through the context and making a partial/incorrect opinion and keep insisting about them. Renouncing the world, controlling their minds for years together, what the Rishis have discovered using their spiritual prowess should be correct on all accounts.
